Category: Let's talk
Ok, so I figured I should start a little thread for us smokers. But unlike most, feel free to either answer the questions or to change the topic. I'm hoping this could be our little spot to chat about, well, smoking. All kinds of tobacco products can be discussed, including ways of making your own cigarettes, as well as stories, websites etc. Please, if you're an antismoker, don't bother posting here. Start a bashing board if you wish. This is a thread for people who either choose to smoke or who support smoker's rights. Mods, if you feel that this is inappropriate or that an age restriction should be placed on it, feel free to either delete it or set the restriction. I don't wanna cause trouble here.
That said, here are some basic questions along with my answers.
How long have you been a smoker?
About three years.
Do you prefer cigarettes, cigars or pipes?
Cigarettes.
How much do you smoke per day?
I started out with four cigarettes a day but now smoke two, mostly for money's sake.
Do you feel that smoking is an addiction for you or an enjoyment?
For me, it's all about the taste, the smell and the feel. I could take or leave the nicotine and I quit for three months due to detoxing from Orthoevra and then went straight back.
What's your favourite brand of cigarettes or tobacco?
From the storebought my current is Karelia. From the loose, it's Sagamore Natural.
Have you switched brands in the past?
Yes. I started out with herbal cigarettes like EcstacyReds (no relation to the drug and can't stand them now) and Honeyrose (I still like the De Luxe occasionally.) When I switched to tobacco, I smoked Quest (never again), American Spirit Lights (not bad if a bit flat), Nat Sherman (forget which kind), Winston Lights (my old standby) Sagamore Natural and some other ryo tobacco, and Papastratos and Karelia (both Greek brands).
Have you ever made your own cigarette? If so, which method did you use: roll your own ryo (papers, filters and maybe a folding machine) or make your own myo (tubes, injectors)?
I've tried rolling my own but got frustrated. I love the myo method.
If you've made your own, do you think the quality and taste of the tobacco is different?
Definitely. I usually smoke additive-free (and am hoping Karelias are in that category) and myo/ryo blends are just that. But even so, there's still a difference. It's fresher to me at least.
How are the prices for premade cigarettes (the ones you buy in packs in stores) where you live?
They're horrible! They're about $6 a pack or more for Winston Lights and more for American Spirits.
Are there any smoking bans where you live? If so, are there any friendly smoking areas near you?
New Jersey has got to be one of the worst states to live in for smokers. There's a statewide ban on smoking in all public places except cassinos, but even those are restricted.
If you're not a smoker but support our rights, what got you into it or do you just believe in rights in general?
Na.
Ok, that's it for now. I'll be posting some smoker-friendly websites soon if I find that this thread takes off.
Um, jes a sec, gotta light up.
Now, I like this idea. I don't have time to answer your questions now, maybe later.
But, thanks for starting this.
cough, cough!
Bob
Ok, here it goes...
I've been a smoker for about 12 years.
I prefer cigarettes. Although I'll smoke cigars on occasion as long as they're the small ones that kinda look like cigarettes.
I smoke about 1 pack a day.
I think it's a combination of both for me. The addiction and the enjoyment.
My faves are Winston full flavored 100's, but their over $3 a pack, so...I usually go with the cheaper Mavericks, unless we have extra money at the moment.
Yes, I started out on Marb Reds, and then went to the cheapest; if I could stomach them, so, I guess that should read the cheapest that I could handle at the time. But, it seems every time I find a fairly cheap cig I like they take them away.
Yes, I've made my own. Tried both ways, and prefer the tubes.
Yep, and usually preferred the premade.
The prices are horrible!!! Over $2 per pack for the cheapest that I'll actually smoke, and for the name brands it's over $3 per pack.
My city is completely public no smoking; which sucks!!!
N/A.
One more comment. The prices are at least in part do to all the people sueing the tobacco companies; which in my mind is totally unrealistic. I choose to smoke, so, why should I (or any of my children) sue the companies if something actually happens? Going on this maybe I should sue Miller Brewery because my dad was an abusive drunk...Makes about as much since. Oops, should have said 2 more comments, here is the last one. I think tobacco has become an escape goat for everything wrong. IE, if something happens; "It must be do to the fact he/she smoked, his/her parents smoked, etc..." There is no one answer for anything, and it's also an easy way for the US government to get extra money...Tobacco tax.
I smoke have for almost 35 years with a couple of years off. I buy what ever is cheap. Never made my own.
I did switch when the name bbrands went crazy in price. I enjoy smoking but wish I didn't smoke as much as I do which is about a pack.
We can smoke in most places except at work we go out and freeze our asses off.
I know these are not in order, but its good to see I am not alone!! Smile
I am also a smoker I smoke anyware from 1 to 2 packs a day
I have never made homade cigs
I will smoke cigars
We don't have any bans yet in my city but we have bans in wisconsin
I smoke to handle stress
I don't think we should have smoking bans I think thats stupid if you ask me
I smoke mostly cheep cigs like grand prees
I like to bye if i have money newports camels or kools
all I can think of for now
I used to be a smoker for about 7 years or close to that.
Used to smoke all 3 cigars not that much though.
I smoked between 1 or 2 packs a day. Thank god I stopped for 2 reason one being too expensive because in jersey a pack of newy or newports lol are about $6.25 may even be higher but the main reason because it was starting to take a toel on my health coughing blood and such in the morning are not fun so decided to stop.
For me it was both an adiction and sort of liked the taist I'am not sure why I did like the taist now though.
I always smoked newports.
I never switched brands.
For a while I made my own sigarets by using the tabaco roler also known as a joint roler hehehe.
To me the made sigarets are a little fresher but they're about just the same.
as mentioned in the first post yes their are laws that prohibit smoking in public places and thank god their are those laws because the smell of cigarets is just horrible and is not rite to put people thru second hand smoke. But yeah thats that.
Smoke away and don't have a healthy long hehehehe
Wow! Thanks to all of you for posting. This is great! blbobby, You made some very good points about suing the tobacco companies. crazy mike, thanks for adding your own things and mixing it up a bit. It keeps the conversation going and adds more flavour if you will. I love beer, thanks for being a respectful x-smoker who didn't preech and become hypocritical. I knew you guys were around there somewhere! *smile* Now here are a few sites for all of you. View at your own risk and remember, I didn't make them, I only support their being known about by others because of their content. Again, mods, if this is inappropriate cause it might be seen as advertising etc, please delete it.
While it's probably true that certain people shouldn't smoke, and while people not liking smoke because of it's smell or medical reasons is certainly understandable, most of what people say about smoking isn't true. I went through this with my honor's logic professor, who was a professional logician and who couldn't argue with me once I brought out the stuff from these guys. This is a site that debunks most of the stuff you're bound to hear from the antis. All of the studies mentioned are impartial, meaning that they weren't from the smoking side or the anti side. The only thing I don't agree with is other drugs not being addictive. As for nicotine, it has actually been used to prevent Parkinson's and Alzheimer's for up to five years, has been used with mentally retarded people to improve their motor skills and (only among people who work with asbestos) it prevents a certain type of lung cancer.

Here's a similar site for the UK.

And here's a smoker's rights site with an international newsletter and other info.

There's also a book out about this, but I haven't read it yet.

I'm not saying smoke a pack a day (though some of you said you do more). Anything in excess is no good, even water. And that's what makes me laugh about much of the antismoking propaganda. They talk about people who were pack-a-day smokers and who got cancer, or those who feel so good after not smoking, and they never take into acount light or moderate smokers. Here's a study that says up to ten cigs a day is ok.

Finally, here are some different sites. This first one sells lose tobacco, along with papers, machines and filters, and tubes and injectors.
http://www.ryotobacco.com
If you're new to myo/ryo, check out this magazine. It's free and has all sorts information on everything.
http://www.ryomagazine.com
These last two sell plastic filters that you can put on a cigarette to reduce the amount of tar and nicotine. I've tried the first ones (both the originals and the mini disposables) and you might be able to find them locally if you look around. The second I can't find offline or online in a small enough quantity for me to try them.

http://www.coffeetobacco.com/
There's also one called Nic Out, but you'll have to do a little searching for it. Dr. Leonard's sells it and it may also be in some other places, but I can't find their actual site.
Anyway, great to see you all here. Let's keep the discussion going.
I hate people who judge people just because they smoke it drives me nuts people are always finding somthing to bitch about and lately it seems to be smokers that is unfare people think that people die just from smoking my grandma died last december 4th and she smoked for over fourty years and her cancer had nothing to do with smoking just thought I
Here's another thought that came to mind recently. I love to collect lighters. I have at least 40 of them, mostly from dollar stores, though I do have a few more expensive ones. One of these is a flameless lighter. The first time I saw it, it was on a blind products site, but I can't remember which one. Anyway, it can fit in your pocket, runs on two double a batteries and from what I've been told, it produces a light like the one found in car lighters. You take your cigarette, place the end in the hole and pull on the slider switch. Once it's lit, you remove the cigarette, let the switch go and a little plastic piece covers the hole. I actually have two, but I've lost the battery covers for both, so they don't work. I'm wondering if any of you have used this type of lighter and where I can find another.
My biggest problem with smokers is that they stink *no offense to any of y'all*, but I like smokers because I can generally make between $100 and $200 by buying duty free cigarettes and selling them on to smokers, they also make $100 from what they'd have to pay at stores so it leaves everyone happy, them coughing and me on my way to the bank, hey I work at a bankso I happen to need to go there often.
rofl Now there's a funny one from a nonsmoker! *smile* I wish more people were lighthearted like you.
